A certification milestone for our engineering team
A brief company note. As of this month, our engineering team collectively holds more than forty professional-level certifications across AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure. The mix includes architect, security, and data engineering specializations on all three platforms, along with several Kubernetes credentials and Terraform certifications on the infrastructure side.
Why we invest in this
We are deliberate about this investment, and we want to be honest about what it does and does not mean. Certifications do not make a consultant. We evaluate hires on delivery record first, and no credential substitutes for having shipped a migration or untangled a production incident. We have met certificate collections attached to people who had never deployed anything, and we have hired brilliant engineers who held none at the time.
What current credentials do provide is calibration. Cloud platforms change fast enough that knowledge acquired three years ago is partially wrong today: services are deprecated, pricing models shift, and new managed offerings change what a sensible architecture looks like. Because we advise across AWS, GCP, and Azure rather than specializing in one, staying current on all three is not optional for us. A recommendation to a client should reflect what each platform offers today, not what it offered when we last looked closely. Recertification cycles force that refresh on a schedule, which is more reliable than good intentions.
There is also a practical client-facing benefit. Several of our engagements involve partner programs and enterprise procurement processes where certified staffing is a checkbox. We would maintain the credentials regardless, but it does not hurt that the checkbox is already ticked.
How we support it
The policy is simple and has been in place since the firm’s early days: every NetLine consultant gets study time on the clock, and the firm covers exam costs, including retakes. We do not claw back exam fees if someone leaves, and we do not tie certifications to compensation formulas. The goal is current knowledge, not trophy accumulation, and we have found that removing the pressure produces better results than adding it.
In practice, most of the team pairs exam preparation with active project work on the same platform, which is when the material actually sticks. A few of our consultants have turned their preparation notes into internal reference documents that now serve the whole team, which is the kind of compounding we hoped for when we set the policy.
What it means for clients
For clients, the practical translation is this: when we recommend a platform, a service, or an architecture, the recommendation is grounded in current, verified knowledge of all three major clouds, not in habit or in whichever platform we happen to know best. Cross-platform fluency is central to how we work, because the honest answer to “which cloud should we use” depends on the workload, the team, and the contract terms, and you can only weigh those fairly if you genuinely know the options.
Congratulations to the eleven team members who earned new credentials this year, several of whom passed professional-level exams on a second platform for the first time. We expect the count to keep climbing, quietly, in the background, where this kind of work belongs.
